Drug and alcohol addiction may stem from a person's usage of one or both during his or her teen years. It has always been portrayed in countless films, television shows and other forms of media that both add to the fun in parties and other social gatherings. Therefore, a lot of teens are roused to try these out too in real life. However, one must remember that media, as a whole, is geared towards the entertainment of their target market and most often than not, they do not portray the negative side of the intake of these substances.

Drugs and alcohol are both very much addictive. Research shows that the younger you are when you first start trying these out, the more likely you will be addicted in the long run. Addiction means being dependent on something and to be dependent on something includes both your mind and your body. If you think you cannot live without something in particular, you are most likely addicted to it. Addiction could also be unavoidable because it is hereditary. Drug and alcohol addiction are some of the worst kinds of dependencies there are.

Some examples of prohibited drugs are Cocaine, Heroine, Marijuana and Speed. Sometimes however, prescription drugs are also abused. Alcohol, on the other hand, can be classified into two: hard drinks and beer. Both have many other sub categories like vodka, gin and rum for hard drinks, and pale lagers and ales for beer. Alcohol prohibition depends on age, but there are still a lot of minors that get access to the latter.

All of these substances have different effects, but their common promise is to loosen up a person's inhibitions, thus their popularity. Symptoms of addiction include loss or increase in appetite, unexplainable weight change, personality modifications, shorter attention spans, irrational anxiety and moodiness, dishonesty and secrecy.

Family and friends of people with substance dependencies are also affected by their conditions. These people, of course, want to help their troubled loved ones. There are many ways for doing so, but before they could take any course of action, the addicts themselves must be in agreement to ensure the effectiveness of the treatment. Only when the individuals with drug and alcohol addiction problems see eye to eye with their condition that they could truly want to change and start healing. It is then with the help of rehabilitation centers, support groups and their loved ones that they could begin their journey to sobriety.
